Revenus avec un voilier : comment gagner de l’argent grâce à ton bateau

Income with a sailboat: how to make money with your boat

What if your boat worked for you?

Imagine for a moment… your boat isn't just for travel. It works for you. Even when you're ashore. Even when you're sleeping. It might seem far-fetched… or even unrealistic. Yet, it's possible!

Initially, we just wanted to travel. To leave without a return date, discover the world, live differently. We didn't think about making money with our boat. We just wanted to be free. But reality quickly catches up with us. Living at sea isn't free. There are repairs, maintenance, unexpected events… and believe me, there always are.

Engines breaking down. A desalinator stopping. An anchor stuck after months in the same spot. These kinds of situations are part of the game. And often, that's when you realize your boat costs you more than it brings in.

At some point, you ask yourself a simple, yet crucial question: is your boat an expense… or an asset?

And that's when everything changes.

Social media: your invisible engine

Your boat can stay at anchor… but your content can travel all over the world.

Social media is probably the most powerful tool you can use today. And contrary to what many believe, you don't need to be perfect. You don't need a $5000 camera. You don't even need to have "a spectacular life."

What matters is consistency… and authenticity.

Share your navigations, your life on board, your mistakes, your learnings. Explain what you understand. What you don't understand. What you learn along the way. That's what creates value.

And the more you share, the more visible you become.

Over time, you'll notice something: people come back. They comment. They get involved. They've been following you from the beginning. And slowly, you go from an audience… to a community.

And a community changes everything. Because they are no longer just people watching. They are people who want to be part of the adventure.

In our case, that's exactly what transformed everything. Our Atypic community has become much more than subscribers. You motivate us to continue, even in the more difficult moments. You share your ideas, your advice, your experiences with us. And every time we launch a new project, you are there, curious, open, ready to embark with us.

And you, who are reading these lines right now… you are part of this community. The simple fact that you are here, reading what I write, proves exactly this point.

That's the true power of content. It's not just about publishing… it's about creating a real connection with people who resonate with the same vision as you.

Your boat sells nothing… it's your story that attracts

The biggest mistake in my opinion is to think that money comes from the boat itself. But the truth is, what people buy… is an emotion.

When we started, we had nothing impressive: no sailing experience, a 50-year-old boat, no idea what we were getting into. But we shared everything. The doubts, the mistakes, the magical moments… and the really rough moments. And that's what created a connection.

There's something powerful about showing reality. Not just the beautiful Instagram pictures, but everyday life. The difficult decisions. The unexpected. The self-doubt. Because that's where people connect.

Today, thousands of people follow our adventure because they recognize themselves in our journey. They see that it's possible, even without initial experience.

If you want to generate income with your sailboat, start there. Document your story. Be real. Show both the challenges and the successes. Because that's what attracts the right people… those who will truly connect with you.

Rental: yes… but differently

Renting your boat or cabins on your boat is an excellent way to generate income. It's often the first idea people have… and that's normal.

But where most people go wrong is in how they present it.

If you just post an ad with a few photos and a price, you're directly competing with all the other boats. And then it becomes a price war.

However, if you tell a story about an experience… everything changes.

People don't just want to rent a boat. They want to experience something. To feel free. To disconnect. To get out of their routine. To create memories.

When you present your boat, talk about the atmosphere on board. The sunsets. The silence at anchor. Coffee in the morning with a view of the water. Unexpected encounters.

And above all, talk about yourself. Your energy. What you bring to the table.

Because in the end, it's not the boat they choose… it's the experience you create around it.

By the way, we are currently organizing a group trip on a catamaran for winter 2027. I don't have all the details yet, but it's coming very soon… and spots will be limited.

Imagine a few days on board with us, in the sun, waking up on the water. Diving directly from the boat, exploring corals, observing marine life, fishing, sailing… but above all, understanding and experiencing real life at sea with us.

We will share everything we have learned in the last 6.5 years of living on the water. Unfiltered. But beyond all that… it's quality time. A human experience. An immersion in the Atypic universe.

If this resonates with you, sign up with this Atypic trip form (no commitment):

By signing up, you'll be among the first to be informed as soon as details are released… and you'll get access to spots before anyone else.

Charter management: making your boat work without being on board

Whether it's a catamaran or a monohull, placing your boat under charter management can completely change the game. It's an often overlooked yet very powerful option.

In concrete terms, charter management is simple: you entrust your boat to a specialized company (often in sunny destinations), and they take care of renting it out for you. You remain the owner… but you don't have to manage clients, reservations, or daily logistics.

In return, you receive monthly rental income or a percentage of the rentals, and you choose how many weeks you spend on board each year.

But it's not just about money.

Most of these companies also take care of a good part of the boat's technical monitoring: regular maintenance, inspections, repair management, boat preparation between clients. Your boat is used… but it is also closely monitored, often better than if it remained docked without moving. Also, in the Mediterranean, it is extremely difficult to get a berth, and charter management often gives you access to a spot.

This is a particularly interesting option if you can't be on board all year round, or if you want to monetize your boat during certain periods.

There are different charter management models. Some offer guaranteed fixed monthly income, others operate on a revenue-sharing basis. Some include full maintenance, others do not. Each program is different, and it is important to understand the conditions before committing.

But used well, it can transform your boat into a real asset.

A boat that no longer sleeps at the dock… but works for you.

Creating an ecosystem around your boat

The real leverage isn't a single source of income. It's having several that complement each other.

With a sailboat, the possibilities are much greater than you think. You can create onboard stays, offer coaching to future owners, develop a YouTube channel, collaborate with brands, build an engaged community, in addition to doing any online work. With Starlink now, you'll have a very powerful internet connection that allows you to work online without any problem.

And the more you develop these areas, the more independent you become.

Your content attracts people. These people become customers. These customers have an experience… and share it in turn. They talk about you. They recommend. They come back.

It's a circle that can become extremely powerful over time.

And then, your boat becomes much more than just a means of transport. It becomes the center of a life project.

For our part, our ecosystem was built little by little, very naturally. At first, we simply started sharing our reality on YouTube, Patreon and social media. We showed our daily life, our learnings, our challenges, our mistakes, our crossings, our life on board… without really knowing where all this could lead us. But with persistence, we built a loyal and engaged community.

Over time, this visibility allowed us to develop other branches around our universe. I created my online clothing store, Atypic, designed for people who love travel, boating, life near the water, and the outdoors. It's not just clothes with a logo. It's a way to extend the Atypic spirit into people's daily lives, with pieces adapted to that lifestyle. Again, the boat was at the center of this idea, because everything we create stems from what we actually live.

Then, for a few winters, we hosted guests on board our boat. This allowed us to have incredible human experiences. We created strong memories, sincere bonds, and also valuable contacts. Because in the end, when you give people something authentic, they don't just leave with beautiful photos. They leave with an emotion, with a story, and often with the desire to stay connected to you.

As our community grew, companies began to approach us to talk about their products. In some cases, I am paid to create content or integrate a product into our videos. In other cases, we simply receive products for free in exchange for visibility. This also didn't happen overnight. It was built because we had an audience, but most importantly, because we had the trust of that audience. And for a brand, that has immense value.

With years and accumulated sailing experience, another door opened: boat deliveries. We started moving boats for owners, sometimes without them on board, sometimes with them to accompany them in their learning and journey.

We were also invited to sailing events to give talks about this incredible lifestyle. That too is a branch of the ecosystem we hadn't seen coming at first. Being able to tell our journey on stage, inspire other people, share what we learned in the field, talk about the true cost of this life, the fears, the mistakes, the solutions, the lessons… all of this is part of what our life on a boat has allowed us to build. When you experience something unique and take the time to tell it, it can become an expertise in itself.

And most recently, we were approached by Tenor Yachts to become BALI representatives. Having delivered a Bali 4.4 for about 1300 nautical miles and crossed the Atlantic on a Bali 4.6, we had the chance to experience these boats in real conditions. Not at the dock. Not just for a visit. While sailing, in real life, with all that it entails. That's precisely why we accepted this opportunity. Because we can talk about it with authenticity, with nuance, and with real-world experience. For us, it was a logical next step.

All this to say that a boat can become much more than just a boat. It can become the foundation of a complete universe. A starting point. An engine for creating content, experiences, income, connections, collaborations, and even a completely different career than the one you initially imagined.

And often, it all starts simply by daring to share what you live.

The truth: it's not "passive"

I'm going to be honest with you. So far, I haven't managed to create much passive income.

My reality is that it requires an enormous amount of time, consistency, and discipline.

Creating content, responding to people, organizing stays, managing unforeseen events… it's work—and many more hours than people might think. In fact, I work much longer hours than in my previous life as a civil servant, where I worked 37.5 hours a week.

But it's not the same kind of work.

It's work that I choose. Work that has meaning for me. Work that is aligned with the life I want to live and that connects me with people who are aligned with my passions.

And that's precisely what I love the most.

My office follows me all over the world. I'm not tied to any particular place. And for a nomad at heart like me, that's exactly what I needed.

I am free to manage my schedule as I wish. Sometimes I take a break in the middle of the day to go diving, or simply walk with my dog on a deserted island. These are simple moments… but they are priceless.

I never wake up to an alarm. I get up when my body is ready—often around 5 or 6 in the morning—because I want to get up. Because I'm excited to start a new day, to continue what I started the day before.

And my work is anything but monotonous. One day, I create video content. Another, I do research, I learn, I develop ideas. Yet another, I handle finances or the structure of my business.

No two days are alike.

And above all, I have the freedom to choose the projects in which I invest my time and energy.

Over time, some things become more fluid. Your content continues to work for you. Your videos continue to be viewed. Your community continues to grow.

Creating passive income is the next step I want to take. For example: writing books, creating courses, buying real estate…

And then, yes… I will have more and more "passive" strings to my bow.

Ultimately…

Your sailboat can remain a dream… or it can become a lever to create even more. It all depends on how you see it.

For us, the sea has never just been a destination. It’s a way of living differently. To reconnect. But also to create, share, and build something sustainable.

We started with no experience. No perfect plan. Just a deep desire to live differently.

This lifestyle allows us not only to travel… but also to generate income, connect with thousands of people, and inspire others to take the leap.

If you feel that call too, don't ignore it.

Because often, the greatest adventures begin exactly like that.
